Polio is a crippling disease that attacks the nervous system. Also known as infantile paralysis 40,000 people in 1954 were afflicted with this disease. Dr. Jonas Salk developed a vaccine to fight polio in 1954 and tested it on 400,000 children. Reported polio cases by 1961 had dropped by ninety-six percent.
